Christmas Day Movies

Three of the four movies that opened Thursday drew more box-office receipts than any other film opening on Christmas Day, industry observers said. According to data compiled by Box Office Mojo, “Marley and Me” did the biggest Christmas business, drawing a $14.6 million gross. This surpassed “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” with $11.7 million, and “Bedtime Stories,” with more than $10.3 million. All three films eclipsed boxing biopic “Ali,” which opened with $10.2 million in gross receipts on Christmas in 2001. “Marley and Me,” starring Jennifer Aniston, is a 20th Century Fox production, while Paramount produced the Brad Pitt vehicle “Benjamin Button” and Buena Vista produced “Bedtime Stories” with Adam Sandler. 10 Best Movies of 2008 from New Yorker Film Critic David Denby

Defiance: An inspirational story, told with a maximum of physical detail and a minimum of rhetoric, about the three Bielski brothers (including Daniel Craig), who kept twelve hundred Jews alive in the forest during the Nazi occupation of Byelorussia.

Rachel Getting Married: Excruciating to get into, but, once you become accustomed to Ann Hathaway’s high-wire performance and the jiggling camera style, very rewarding.

The Class: a smart, cocky teacher in multi-ethnic Paris takes on a class of turbulent ninth-graders, who then come back at him hard. Essential.

The Wrestler: Blood, suffering, and nobility at the lowest rungs of professional wrestling, starring Mickey Rourke.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Woody Allen’s take on American girls living abroad in complicated Old Europe; sunshiny, art-loving, melancholy.

Wall-E: Apocalyptic dismay and social satire mixed into one; Pixar’s most ambitious animated film yet.

Milk: Buoyant biopic with Sean Penn’s body- and soul-transforming performance as the gay-rights leader Harvey Milk in seventies San Francisco.

Trouble The Water: An African-American woman remains in her New Orleans house during Katrina with a portable video camera; first chaos, and then reassertion of personal will.

Revolutionary Road: The ultimate suburban-despair-in-the-fifties movie, from the Richard Yates novel, with Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet fighting at full tilt.

I’ve Loved You So Long: Not a great film, but a great performance from Kristen Scott-Thomas as a woman who has committed a terrible crime and then returns to French bourgeois society.

World Premiere Of Spider-Man 3 Takes Place In Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - “Spider-Man 3,” the third film in the Spider-Man film franchise and based on the fictional Marvel Comics character, debuted with much fan-fare in Tokyo on Monday.

Thousands of Japanese fans stood waiting in the rain to catch a glimpse of film stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, who lighted up the stage at an open-air event before the premiere.

In the film, the superhero battles his own inner demons that are brought out by his blacker and more powerful suit. Two new villains, Sandman and Venom, also arrive in New York with overpowering abilities.

The film’s budget is reported to be $250 million, making it one of the most expensive movies in Hollywood. According to BBC reports, the visual effects proved to be the most costly.

John Dykstra, who won the Academy Award for Visual Effects for his work on “Spider-Man 2,” didn’t work in the recent sequel, with fellow supervisor Scott Stokdyk taking over the reins.

Tokyo has also opened a Spiderman-themed exhibition at the Roppongi Hills complex, according to DPA news agency.

“Spider-Man 3″ will be commercially released in multiple countries, including Japan, China and some European countries, starting May 1. It will be available for U.S. viewers beginning May 4.

The U.S. premiere will take place at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on April 30.

Harry Potter Movie Shortened To Avoid Grindhouse Failure

Harry Potter movie makers are trimming the next installment of the fantasy franchise, fearful it’s too long and will turn movie goers off.

Following the failure of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double-bill Grindhouse, which is more than three hours long, studio bosses at Warner Bros have ordered director David Yates to cut the running time of Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix.

Star Daniel Radcliffe insists the cuts are a positive thing, and fans will still be happy with the finished film.

He says, “People should be able to let that go. You can still read the book and the film is chock-full of stuff. The fans will be pleased.”
